V-Forest, A newly funded CBE-JU project had officially started their activities on 1st July 2026. The project will focus on the valorisation of underutilised forest biomass resulting from natural disturbances. The four-year initiative is coordinated by Abo Akademi University, supported by partners with complimentary expertise in forestry management (Romsilva & Cheile Bicazului-Hășmaș), chemistry and biotechnology (Instituto Tecnologico Del Embalaje, Transporte Y Logistica-ITENE, Vertoro BV & CO2Dry BV) environmental assessments (Strateco) and cosmetic innovation (Ecomaat).
Our kick-off was held in Turku, Finland on 14-15 July 2026. In this meeting, the representatives of partners had opportunity to meet each other to discuss the project strategy, the feedstock supply, technological routes and end user expectations. Other than that, the members had a chance to visit our coordinator’s laboratorium facilities and had an enjoyable team bonding activity.
In the first three months since the project began its journey, the V-Forest team has been working hard to establish the project’s administrative framework, develop the project’s visual identity and communication materials, and coordinate the first feedstock samples for delivery to project partners.
Our first set of deliverables are also being finalised during this period including the biomass supply maps, which will provide an overview of the availability and estimated quantities of underutilised wood biomass within our National Park partner areas. This information will help identify potential biomass resources for the project’s upcoming activities.
